Pelleting and pelletizing both describe the production of small, uniform pellets, but their usual industrial meanings are different. Pelleting commonly refers to compressing feed, biomass or powder through a die. Plastic pelletizing usually means melting or conditioning a polymer before cutting it into granules. A pellet mill applies pressure to dry or conditioned material. Rollers force the material through holes in a die, and knives cut the emerging pieces to length.
This process is widely associated with:
animal feed;

agricultural residue;
compressed powders.
The material is compacted, but it is not normally melted into a homogeneous polymer phase. Moisture, binder content, pressure and die-hole dimensions influence pellet strength.
Plastic pelletizing follows a different route. Thermoplastic material is heated until it can flow. A screw then conveys, mixes and pressurizes the melt before it reaches a die.
After extrusion, the material is cut by a selected pelletizing method. Strand cutting is a common example: polymer strands are cooled and then chopped into granules.

In plastics, “pelletizing” and “granulating” are frequently used for the production of reusable granules. Yet “granulator” can also describe a size-reduction machine that chops rigid scrap before extrusion.
For example, a crusher may reduce plastic parts into irregular regrind. A pelletizing machine then melts, filters and cuts that regrind into more uniform pellets. The two outputs should not be confused.
Clean PE or PP regrind may be suited to a single-screw configuration. A formulation containing fillers, pigments or several polymers may require the stronger mixing action of a twin-screw system. Wet washed flakes need effective dewatering and drying before pelletizing.
