A vertical mixer normally uses upward conveying and gravity return, while a horizontal mixer moves material across a wider chamber through ribbons or paddles. Horizontal mixers may use a heating system around the chamber. One published 1,000 kg horizontal model uses an 11 kW drive and 12 kW heating power. Larger models are available with higher drive and heating power.
Heating does not automatically guarantee that every resin reaches the required moisture condition. Temperature, residence time, material depth, airflow, initial moisture, and resin sensitivity must all be considered.
A horizontal chamber may offer more direct access to the ribbons or paddles, which is useful when a factory changes colors or formulations frequently. Residual powder around blades, corners, seals, and discharge points must still be inspected.
Vertical mixers can handle large volumes efficiently, but their height and internal tube arrangement may require a more planned cleaning procedure. Access doors, discharge design, forced feeder, and any heating duct should be included in the maintenance review.
Before opening either machine, operators should follow the manufacturer’s shutdown and lockout procedures. The mixing element must be completely stopped and isolated from power.
